PART 1 OF 3

Cellular Portraits

The Cellular Portraits project offers a unique and thought-provoking exploration of the complexities of personal identity in the digital age. By delving into the vast image content and text messages stored on a subject's phone, this project aims to challenge the traditional methods of analyzing and interpreting one's character.

Through an interactive wall projection controlled by a smartphone, Cellular Portraits presents a mesmerizing 6x6 foot photo mosaic portrait that encapsulates the entirety of a subject's digital footprint. This immersive experience offers a fascinating insight into a person's life's diverse facets and intricate relationships between them.

To create these captivating portraits, every subject willingly surrendered their phone to the project creator, who meticulously extracted a complete and uncurated inventory of every photo, text message, and media file on the device. Each element is then assigned a place in the mosaic portrait based on the various tonalities of the subject's visage, resulting in a visually stunning and thought-provoking representation of the individual's digital identity.
